Synthetic Fossil

The name of this project comes from the form itself, which carries subtle echoes of a fossil-like structure. At the same time, the use of shaders and lighting transforms it into something that feels futuristic, polished, and distinctly modern—hence the word synthetic.

The shape was modeled from two simple circles that were  deformed and sculpted through modifiers such as Simple Deform, Smooth, and Subdivision. This combination gave the form both organic irregularity and a refined, fluid elegance. To add depth and visual complexity, the surface employs a mix of wave and Voronoi textures, tied into a displacement map that creates striking patterns across the geometry.

A key aspect of the shader setup is the subsurface scattering, which allows light to penetrate slightly into the material and scatter, producing subtle, almost glowing variations of color that bring the artwork to life.

The smaller spherical elements are tight with particles system, which means the form could be animated smoothly, giving it an even more dynamic presence. The project was part of a YouTube tutorial I followed.
